Downside of MomMed S21

The MomMed S21, while offering various benefits, does have some disadvantages that I think you should consider:

Battery Life: The S21’s battery life is around 120 minutes or 5-6 pumping sessions. For mothers who need to pump frequently or are exclusively pumping, I feel this battery life may not be sufficient and could result in interruptions during pumping sessions.

LED Light Stays On: The light emitted from the LED screen is relatively low, however the light stays on for your entire pumping session. This can make the pump less discrete depending on your setting.

Lack of Advanced Features: The S21 may lack certain advanced features that other more expensive breast pumps offer, such as Bluetooth connectivity, mobile app integration, or more sophisticated pumping modes like vibration.

I love that this pump has such a large range of suction levels as I believe that this adjustability is essential as the highest pump setting may not be the most effective for your milk production, especially as you need to be comfortable and relax for the milk to flow.

Comfort

Based on my personal experience, comfort is a pivotal factor when it comes to pumping. Nobody wants to be uncomfortable while pumping, or worse in pain!

Comfortable Suction Levels

As mentioned earlier, the presence of 12 distinct suction levels offers you the flexibility to fine-tune your settings, ensuring you discover the perfect level for ultimate comfort.

This capacity to personalize suction intensity empowers you to identify a configuration that aligns precisely with your comfort and milk flow requirements.

When you’re starting out or using the massage mode, opting for lower suction levels can gently stimulate the breast and initiate milk letdown, ensuring a comfortable initiation of the session.

Furthermore, the ability to tweak suction levels enables you to pinpoint an optimal strength that is both comfortable and effective in milk extraction. It’s important to note that the highest setting might not necessarily yield the best results. Achieving a state of comfort and relaxation during your pumping session is just as crucial in facilitating milk flow.

In my view, this degree of personalization ensures that every pumping session is tailored to your preferences and body, contributing to a more comfortable and enjoyable experience while expressing breast milk.

Customizable Fit

The MomMed S21 understands that every mother’s breast size and shape is unique. To cater to different needs, the breast pump offers a variety of flange sizes for a customizable fit.

The S21 comes with a default 27mm silicone breast shield combined with a 24mm flange.

Additionally, you have the option to purchase 17mm, 19mm, 21mm, and 24mm size flanges and a 24mm breast shield separately.

To use a smaller flange size with the 27mm breast shield you can either put the 24mm flange insert into the 27mm silicone breast shield and then a smaller flange insert (17/19/21mm) or you can replace the 27mm silicone breast shield with a 24mm silicone breast shield and then insert the smaller flange size.

I think that this range of options ensures that you can easily find the perfect fit, enhancing comfort during your pumping sessions, however for moms with a smaller nipple size you may not appreciate having to purchase the smaller flanges separately or having to use multiple flanges to get your right fit.

MomMed does provide a nipple size chart which I do love for assisting you in determining your correct flange size. I think this thoughtful feature helps you find the most suitable fit, contributing to a more comfortable and efficient pumping experience.

Quiet Operation

Though not entirely silent, the MomMed S21 breast pump peroates pretty quietly, generating sound levels lower than 45dB.

I think it’s important to note that if you’re in a tranquil office setting the sound of your pump will be noticeable, but I do feel that it is quiet enough to provide a discreet and inconspicuous pumping experience, making it ideal for use at home or in public places.

Better yet, the quiet operation minimizes distractions, allowing you to pump comfortably and confidently without worrying about waking your sleeping baby.

User-Friendliness

The MomMed S21 breast pump is designed with user-friendliness in mind, offering several features that make it easy and convenient to use.

LED Display

The S21 is equipped with a small LED display that provides clear and intuitive information during operation. The display allows you to easily navigate through the different pumping modes and adjust the suction levels according to your preference.

What I love about this screen is that it is curved. The angle of it makes it very easy to see while it is in your bra, without the need to reposition it.

What I don’t love is that the LED screen light remains on for the entire pumping session. Although it gives off minimal light, I feel it does distract from it’s discreetness. I’m also not a fan of the additional light in the middle of the night.

That said, the LED screen itself is basic, probably to ensure the all in one design, but it certainly has all the basic features you’ll need.

Customizable Pumping Settings

As previously discussed, the S21 breast pump offers customizable pumping settings to suit your specific needs.

With 12 adjustable suction levels and 3 pumping modes (Stimulation/Expression/Auto), you can tailor the pumping experience to your comfort and milk flow requirements.

I do love that there are only 3 buttons on the pump, so it is very user-friendly in terms of operation.

Timer

I really love that the MomMed S21 comes with a built-in timer.

I think this is a big plus in enabling your to easily track your pumping sessions.

Accessories

When it comes to accessories, I think the MomMed S21 shines, especially given its price point!

The pack comes equipped with a convenient bra adjustment buckle feature that you’re sure to love, just as I do! This clever buckle allows you to easily adapt the pump’s size to fit your existing bras, eliminating the need to purchase new ones dedicated to pumping sessions.

You also get disposable milk storage bags, two charging cables, replacement diaphragms and duckbill valves, 24mm flange inserts, dust bags for the pumps, and even an informative breastfeeding manual.

Container Capacity

The MomMed S21 wearable pump boasts a roomy container capacity of 6 oz, offering ample space for storing your expressed breast milk. While it can accommodate up to 6 oz, it’s advisable to pump within 4 oz for optimal efficiency.

This generous capacity is especially beneficial for mothers who need to express a substantial amount of milk during each pumping session or prefer to pump less frequently throughout the day. With this large container, there is less need for frequent emptying, allowing you to focus on expressing milk without interruptions and maximizing your pumping efficiency.

Pouring Made Easy

I love that the user-friendliness extends on the S21 to its easy-to-pour spout on the collection container. This thoughtful feature ensures that you can pump without any worries about spilling a single drop of precious breast milk.

Transparent Design

Whilst not as transparent in design as other wearable breast pumps on the market, the cups on the S21 are completely clear design.

Unfortunately, when wearing the S21 in your bra you are unable to see the cups and how your expression is tracking. This means to monitor the amount of milk you are expressing at any given moment you need pull down your bra, awkwardly move your neck, or interrupt your pumping session and remove the pump.

I feel this takes away from the discretion of the pump somewhat.

Assembly

One think that surprised me is how straightforward the all-in-one design is. Ther are only 5 parts to the pump, so disassembling and reassembling it extremely easy.

I do think it is important to note though that some users have found that because there is no clip to hold the pump motor in place, it is held in by silicone diaphragms, that it becomes loose over time.   

They need to be replaced every 4-6 months dependent on use. That said, there are 2 spare silicone diaphragms that come in your pack.

Portability And Battery Life

The MomMed S21 breast pump excels in portability and battery life, offering mothers the flexibility to pump on the go without being tied to a power source.

Portability

The S21 is designed with portability in mind!

It’s lightweight and has a compact all-in-one design. Plus is wireless feature means you don’t have to worry about being near an electrical outlet, giving you the freedom to pump discreetly and comfortably wherever you are.

It also comes with 2 silky soft, velvet protection bags so you can easily pop them in your handbag whilst on the go.

Battery Life

With a usage time of 120 minutes on a single charge, the pump can support multiple pumping sessions (5-6 sessions) before needing to be recharged.

Whilst this battery life isn’t as impressive as other wearable breast pumps on the market, I feel it is ample for a wearable breast pump.

For me, 5 to 6 pumping sessions is plenty of battery life for pumping on the go.

However, you may want to take the battery life into consideration if you’re planning to pump full time, as you will need to recharge it throughout the day.

USB-C Type Charging

The S21 pump fully charges within just 2.5 hours.

Whilst this is not particularly fast, I do love that the pump uses a USB charging port. This makes pumping on the go much easier as you can charge your pump from your car or even your work computer.

The USD charging ensures that you can easily find compatible charging cables and adapters, adding to the pump’s portability and convenience.

Auto Shut-Off Feature

I think an auto shut off feature is a great option to have on any portable breast pump.

This safety feature not only conserves battery life but also gives you peace of mind, knowing that the pump will automatically power down to prevent any potential issues from extended use.

I love that the MomMed S21 comes with a 30minute auto shut-off feature which I feel is more than sufficient especially give the average pumping session is 15 to 20 mins long.

Hygiene And Cleaning

Ensuring proper hygiene and cleanliness is paramount when utilizing a breast pump, and the MomMed S21 has been crafted to simplify and enhance the cleaning procedure.

Detachable Parts

The S21 features detachable parts that allow for effortless disassembly of the breast pump when it’s time for cleaning.

Each component, including the flange, duckbill valve, silicone diaphragm, and milk containers, and can be easily separated from the pump motor. This convenient disassembly enables easy access to all parts that come into contact with breast milk, ensuring thorough and effective cleaning.

I really like that there are plenty of easy to follow assembly and disassembly instructions to help make the process even more simplified.

Closed System Design

When looking for a breast pump, ideally you want to choose a pump that has a closed system design. This feature ensures breast milk remains isolated from the tubing and motor during pumping.

It also plays a crucial role in maintaining the hygiene and cleanliness of the breast pump, as it effectively prevents any potential contamination or bacteria buildup in the pump’s internal components.

The close system design also helps to prevent milk leakages.

The S21 has a closed system design.

BPA-Free And Food-Grade Materials

Made from premium materials, the MomMed S21 is made from food grade silicone and is BPA free.

Cleaning

The cleaning process for the MomMed is designed to be simple and hassle-free.

After each use, the detachable parts can be placed into the dishwasher for easy cleaning.

Alternatively, you can rinse them in warm, soapy water, followed by a thorough rinse with clean water.

Cleaning all the components that come into contact with breast milk is crucial to prevent the growth of bacteria and ensure optimal hygiene.

Regular Maintenance

When it comes to maintenance, I really like the transparency that MomMed have provided in their manual for the regular replacement of parts.

Silicone breast shields need to be replaced every 4 to 6 months.

Silicone diaphragms need to be replaced every 4 to 6 months.

Duckbill valves need to be replaced every 1.5 to 2 months.

Like with any pump, replacing valve membranes, duck valves, and breast shields is crucial to uphold the hygiene and efficiency of your pump during each pumping session.

It does come at an additional cost, but MomMed have supplied a year’s worth of replacement pump parts in their pack which I think is fantastic.

Price and Value For Money

When it comes to price and value for money, I think the MomMed S21 shines!

There is a ton of value jammed packed into this budget friendly wearable breast pump that makes it comparable with other more expensive brands.

Whilst you may be giving up some premium features of other wearable breast pump brands, like a tracking app, I really do feel that for the price, you really are getting bang for your buck.

For me the value lies in its all in one design and customizable suction. I also love all the inclusions you get to help you at the start of your pumping journey.

I should also add that if you purchase your pump via Amazon, and then register it online via the MomMed website, MomMed will give you a lifetime warranty. I feel that that is almost unheard of for a breast pump company and in itself offers fantastic value for money.
