Elvie Vs Willow

Both Willow and Elvie are premium brands in the wearable breast pump space. As I’ll discuss below, there are some standout features that I believe sets them apart from other wearable pumps on the market.

Whilst both brands offer a range of pumps, for this review I will be comparing both brands’ signature breast pumps, Elvie Pump vs Willow 3.0.

All About Elvie

Elvie is a pioneering brand known for its innovative and high-quality breast pumping solutions designed for modern mothers.

At the heart of Elvie’s offerings is the “Elvie Pump,” a wireless and hands-free breast pump that seamlessly integrates with a smartphone app for personalized pumping experiences. The brand also offers the Elvie Curve, a manual breast pump focused on simplicity and comfort, and the Elvie Stride, an affordable option providing hands-free, hospital-grade pumping.

What sets the Elvie Pump apart is its emphasis on discretion, convenience, and efficient milk expression. With a weight of just 0.46 pounds and dimensions of 2.56 x 3 inches, it’s remarkably lightweight and compact for easy portability. The elegantly curved design discreetly fits within a nursing bra, offering private pumping. Its near-silent operation ensures discreet use even in quiet settings or during meetings.

The integration with the smartphone app is a standout feature, enabling real-time monitoring of milk expression and long-term production tracking. This app connectivity adds to its discreet nature, as you can control and empty the pump directly from your smartphone.

The clever design extends to milk collection, with a dedicated 5-ounce “bottle” beneath the pump. This setup streamlines the management and storage of expressed milk. Each pump unit holds up to 5 ounces (150 milliliters) of breast milk.

The Elvie Pump provides two modes (stimulation and expression) and 7 suction levels for personalized comfort during pumping sessions. Its rechargeable battery offers around 2.5 hours of operation (approximately 7 sessions) on a single charge. The pump comes with a 2-year warranty, reflecting its durability and reliability.

In addition, all pump parts are BPA-free and dishwasher-safe, adding to the user-friendly experience.

All About Willow

Willow is a renowned brand known for its innovative wearable breast pumps, providing nursing mothers with hands-free and discreet pumping experiences.

Their range includes two notable wearable breast pumps: the Willow Go and Willow 3.0.

The standout among Willow’s offerings is the “Willow 3.0.” Its distinctive feature is the exceptional 360° of leak-proof mobility, allowing you to engage in activities like yoga while pumping—an unparalleled level of freedom.

A key differentiator of the Willow 3.0 is the option to pump directly into a milk storage container or a disposable milk bag, simplifying the process. Each side has a 4-ounce milk storage capacity, and the app integration offers real-time monitoring and thorough tracking of milk expression. Moreover, it’s Apple Watch compatible for discreet control, especially beneficial for Apple users.

The slim, curved design ensures a discreet fit within a bra while maintaining comfort. Maintenance is streamlined with just two BPA-free parts to clean, and dishwasher-safe components facilitate easy upkeep.

The battery takes about two hours to fully charge and provides around 1.5 hours of operation (approximately 5 sessions) on a single charge. This accommodates extended pumping sessions without interruptions.

Suction Strength: Up to 245mmHG

Pros:

  • 360° Leak-proof Mobility: The Willow offers unmatched freedom of movement, even allowing activities like yoga during pumping.
  • Disposable Bags Option: Choose to pump into reusable breast milk storage containers or spill-proof, ready-to-store bags.
  • Discreet Design: The slim and curved design of the Willow 3.0 Pump fits comfortably inside a bra for discreet pumping.
  • Fewer Cleaning Parts: It has only two parts to clean, making maintenance less cumbersome compared to some alternatives.
  • App Integration: The app syncs with the pump, offering real-time monitoring and long-term tracking of milk expression.
  • Easy Cleaning: Pump parts are dishwasher safe.
  • Price: Whilst the Willow 3.0 is a premium wearable breast pump, it is slightly more affordable than the Elvie when buying the double pump option.
  • Warranty: Comes with 1-year warranty.

Cons:

  • Capacity Limitation: Each side holds up to 4 ounces of milk, slightly less than some other options like the Elvie.
  • Bag Costs: Disposable bags can be expensive, and additional expenses are involved for the reusable container.
  • Dedicated Sides: Willow offers dedicated right and left versions, unlike some pumps that can be used on either side.

Similarities And Differences Between Willow And Elvie

There are some significant differences between Elvie and Willow that will help you choose which brand is right for you. I’ve explored those differences (and any similarities) below.

Discretion

Both the Elvie Pump and the Willow 3.0 prioritize discretion in their designs, allowing you to pump with confidence in various settings.

Each pump is designed to be wearable and fit comfortably within your nursing bra, enhancing discreetness by blending seamlessly with clothing.

Whilst the Elvie pump is slightly smaller and lighter, which may be more appealing to some, you do need to be in an upright position to use it.

Personally, I think this is where the Willow 3.0’s innovative 360° leak-proof mobility shines in terms of discretion. You don’t have to worry about accidental leaks from movement like you do with the Elvie. For example, if you’re at work and you bend over to put something in a drawer you risk leaking with the Elvie, whereas with the Willow 3.0 you know you have full protection. In fact, it even accommodates activities like yoga or lying down during pumping.

Performance and Efficiency

The Elvie Pump and the Willow 3.0 both offer customizable modes and suction levels to cater to individual comfort and milk expression needs. However, they differ in the way their modes and suction levels are implemented.

The Elvie Pump provides users with two modes (stimulation and expression) and 7 suction levels that they can adjust to suit their milk flow and comfort levels.

Similarly, the Willow 3.0 has 7 suction levels, however unlike being based on specific phases (stimulation or expression), the suction levels of the Willow 3.0 are determined by the milk flow for each breast. As soon as milk flow is detected, the pump transitions to expression mode.

During this phase, users have access to three initial suction levels, which mirror the levels available during the stimulation phase.

Once approximately 0.5 ounces of milk have been pumped from one side, all seven suction levels become accessible for that breast. It’s important to note that if the latch is broken, the requirement to pump 0.5 ounces on one side will reset.

Whilst similar, I think the Willow offers more intuitive functionality.

That said, if you’re looking for a stronger suction the Elvie is the stronger pump with a suction power up to 270Hg vs the Willow 3.0 with a suction power up to 245Hg.

Single and Double Pumping

If you’re looking for a pump that offers versatility, then the Elvie is your pump. It can be used as both a single or double pump, and on either side of the breast.

This is in contrast to the Willow 3.0 that only comes as a double pump and has designated left and right pumps.

I think this really comes into play when you are a part time or occasional pumper. Being able to use your pump on either side means that you can spend less in the initial purchase, by only buying a single pump, or it allows you to cycle between recharging your pumps in you do buy a double.

Comfort

Flange size it crucial for your pumping comfort.

I love that both pumps offer differing flange sizes to accommodate for different nipple sizes.

I really like that the Willow 3.0 allows you to choose your specific flange size at purchase whereas the Elvie pump comes with 2 size options (24mm and 28mm).

The Elvie also only has flange sizes available in size 21mm, 24mm, and 28mm. This is limited, especially in comparison to the Willow that offers sizes 15mm, 17mm, 19, 21mm, 24mm, and 27mm.

Battery

In terms of battery life, the Elvie Pump is the clear winner.

The Elvie pump battery takes around two hours to reach full charge and lasts around 2.5 hours of operation (approximately 7 pumping sessions) on a single charge.

This is in contrast to the Willlow 3.0 wearable pump that takes around two hours to reach full charge and lasts around 1.5 hours of operation (approximately 5 pumping sessions) on a single charge.

Furthermore, users can conveniently charge the Elvie Pump using a micro-USB cable, a widely available and versatile charging solution.

On the other hand, the Willow 3.0’s battery charging process involves a charging dock, which is provided with the pump. While this charging method ensures a secure connection, it’s essential to have the charging dock on hand for effective recharging.

The Elvie double also comes with 2 charging cables, where as the Willow 3.0 only comes with 1 which when needing to charge 2 pumps can be very inconvenient.

App Integration

The Elvie Pump and the Willow 3.0 each both offer accompanying smartphone apps that enhance the pumping experience, and I think sets them apart from other wearable breast pumps such as Momcozy.

The Elvie Pump’s app integration provides users with a comprehensive tool for monitoring and managing their pumping sessions. Through the app, users can track real-time milk expression data, allowing them to monitor their output and adjust settings as needed. The app also offers long-term production tracking, which is particularly valuable for those exclusively pumping or closely monitoring their milk supply. This comprehensive data visualization empowers users to make informed decisions about their pumping routine and milk storage.

In contrast, the Willow 3.0’s app is notably compatible with the Apple Watch, offering a unique advantage in terms of accessibility and convenience. The app syncs with the pump, enabling users to control and adjust pumping settings directly from their smartphone or Apple Watch. This seamless integration allows for discreet control and tracking, making adjustments on the go without the need to access the physical pump. However, the Willow app primarily focuses on monitoring milk flow and adapting suction levels based on detected flow rather than offering as extensive data tracking as the Elvie app.

The Willow app is also more user friendly and reliable compared to the Elvie app.

Milk Storage

Milk storage is a crucial consideration for pumping moms, and both the Elvie Pump and the Willow 3.0 present distinctive approaches to accommodating expressed milk.

The Elvie Pump’s milk storage is facilitated through a cleverly designed 5-ounce “bottle” that collects the expressed milk directly from the pumping process.

This bottle can seamlessly transition to storage, as it is compatible with refrigeration and freezing, reducing the need for transferring milk to separate containers.

This dual-purpose functionality minimizes the number of parts to clean and ensures efficient milk management.

Conversely, the Willow 3.0 offers an innovative solution by allowing pumping directly into spill-proof, ready-to-store milk bags or reusable containers.

This design simplifies the milk collection process, as users can pump directly into bags that can be labelled and stored without additional steps. The compatibility with both disposable bags and reusable containers grants versatility in storage options.

The Willow 3.0’s approach caters to those seeking an efficient method for preserving and organizing their expressed milk. However, users should consider the additional cost of disposable bags or reusable containers when factoring in milk storage expenses. And I think it’s important to note the Willow capacity maxes out at 4 ounces per pumping session.

Which one is better? Well, that will depend on your preferences for storing your breast milk and if you’re willing to pay the additional cost for disposable milk storage bags.

For me, I think if you’re planning to freeze your breast milk for long term storage then the Willow really does simply the process.

In terms of container capacity though, if you’re a heavy milk producer, the 4 oz capacity of the Willow may not be large enough leading to leakage.

Cleaning

When it comes to cleaning, both wearable pumps are closed system which means that milk never comes into contact with the pump or tubing, making it a more hygienic option and much easier to clean.

Both pumps also feature BPA free, dishwasher safe parts that again help to simplify the cleaning process.

Where they differ is the Elvie pump has 5 parts to clean, where as the Willo 3.0 only has 3.

In my opinion, both are easy to clean and maintain.

Price

Both the Willow and Elvie are premium wearable breast pumps. They offer features that other wearable pumps do not such as their integrated apps. Therefore, neither of these pumps come with a budget price tag.

Where the Elvie can be a significantly cheaper option is if you only want to purchase a single pump. This option is not available with the Willow 3.0.

That said when comparing the double pumps, the Elvie is slightly more expense. Though this can vary based on where you purchase your pump from.
