Diaper Genie Elite Vs Complete

On the surface, these two diaper pails seem very similar. In this section, we’ll look closer at the unique features of the Diaper Genie Elite and Complete.

All About Diaper Genie Elite

The Diaper Genie Elite was a revolution in the diaper pail market.

One of the major issues of the standard diaper pail was that you needed your hands to dispose of diapers.

If you had one hand holding a wiggly baby, and one hand holding a dirty diaper, this wasn’t always possible. Not to mention, hands aren’t always clean after a diaper change!

But the Diaper Genie Elite essentially removed the hands from the equation.

Instead of struggling with a lid, you simply activated a foot pedal, and dropped the diaper through the opening.

The hands-free opening made it easier for parents to dispose of diapers without getting their hands dirty (or, dirtier).

And thanks to the automatic release system, there was no need to push the diaper through the opening. Less mess, and no need to bend down!

However, the Diaper Genie Elite lacked some durability. Frequent use could leave the lid sticking up, and the drop through mechanism failing.

The Elite was eventually discontinued.

Pros

  • The hands-free operation revolutionized diaper pails.
  • A double drop system reduced odor leakage.
  • Incredibly easy to empty, as the upper half lifted away.
  • Large capacity, and could hold many days of diapers.

Cons

  • A lack of durability could lead to breaking, and diaper disasters.
  • Because the lid flipped backwards, emptying the Elite doubled the footprint.
  • Discontinued.

All About Diaper Genie Complete

Diaper Genie is a brand known for their innovation. The Complete is their newest attempt at creating the perfect diaper pail.

Hands-free, it’s easy to use, with minimized odor leaking.

The Complete uses a step pedal to open and close the lid. Drop the diaper in, and when you close the lid, it will fall into the main pail.

Minimal effort, and minimal odor leakage. For bad smells that do break free, the carbon filter in the lid works to neutralize them.

The Diaper Genie Complete is all about ease. With a tall and slim build, it slips easily into small spaces.

The opening pulls forward, rather than flipping backwards, so the pail can be emptied where it is. This can be a little fiddly to use, but the small footprint is helpful in tight corners.

The Complete builds on the original design of the Elite, but it isn’t perfect. It’s also a smaller pail, and the frequent emptying can result in waste.

Pros

  • The hands-free operation is hugely convenient.
  • A carbon filter in the lid absorbs excess odor.
  • The double lock design minimizes odor leakage.
  • Slim and tall, the Complete is easy to reach without bending, and fits into smaller corners.
  • To empty the Complete, the compartment pulls forward, keeping the footprint small.

Cons

  • The Complete has a smaller overall capacity, and can fill up quickly.
  • The emptying mechanism can be fiddly, which might result in waste.

Similarities And Differences Between Diaper Genie Elite And Complete

The Diaper Genie Complete built on the initial features of the Elite. Let’s take a look at how these diaper pails are similar, and the important differences.

Hands-Free Use

The Diaper Genie Elite had an excellent hands-free function.

This was one of the major selling points of the original elite: a diaper pail that you could use without getting your hands dirty, and without any uncomfortable bending.

The Diaper Genie Complete has kept this same impressive hands-free operation, but with a larger foot pedal for better control.

Odor Control

The Diaper Genie Elite and Complete use the same Double Air-Tite clamps to lock in bad odors.

The double opening system prevents smells from leaking through the pail. Both Diaper Genies perform well at this, although some parents feel the Elite had a tighter lock.

But for added odor control, the Complete includes a carbon filter in the lid. This absorbs and neutralizes the excess odors that do leak through as the bag fills.

The Elite didn’t have this addition.

When you open the lid of the Diaper Genie, Elite or Complete, you are going to get a whiff of bad odor.

This is frustrating, but the double lock design does minimize how much of the smell can escape.

Durability

One of the major issues of the Elite was durability. Overall, the design was smart, but it was let down by some elements of poor construction.

A weak build is never a good thing, but when it comes to a diaper pail, bad construction can lead to some messy disasters.

As the Elite pail started to fill up, things could get jammed. And when the pail was jammed, it caused the pins and connections to strain.

All this strain could sometimes result in a broken pin, and diapers where you didn’t want them to be! Potentially, this was an easy fix — but not always. Some Elite pails broke beyond repair.

The Diaper Genie Complete, however, is incredibly durable.

Emptying

The Diaper Genie Elite and Complete have a similar emptying mechanism. You open the pail, slice the top of the bag, and tie the top closed (while holding your breath)!

Then, simply pull through the refill liner, tie the bottom shut, and close the pail.

When it’s time to empty, the main difference between the Diaper Genie Elite and Complete is where the pail opens.

The Diaper Genie Elite has an opening in the middle of the pail. The lid lifts up and away, and you can remove the bag beneath.

The large opening makes it easy to remove a full bag of dirty diapers, and to avoid waste.

However, you need space to empty the Elite. Because the lid flips back, you effectively double the footprint of the diaper pail.

On the Complete, the opening is closer to the top of the pail. The main body then moves forward, keeping the footprint slim.

It can be a little fiddly to access the bag, and you might end up pulling through too much of the refill. But for small spaces, the Complete is the better system.

Size

The Diaper Genie Complete is taller and slimmer than the Elite, with a reduced capacity.

The Diaper Genie Elite was 21.75 inches high, compared to the 27 inches of the Complete.

However, the Elite was wider, with a greater depth. When you consider all the dimensions, the Elite and Complete are relatively similar, with the Elite on top.

However, the slim build of the Diaper Genie Complete does have some advantages over the bulk of the Elite.

The Complete can fit into corners, and won’t take up too much room in the nursery. And although it might have a smaller overall capacity, it can still hold a lot of diapers.

By the time you’ve reached the top, you’ll be happy to empty the pail.

Is The Diaper Genie Elite Discontinued?

Yes, the Diaper Genie Elite has been discontinued. The Complete has many of the same features, but a slightly different build, and an added carbon filter.

The Complete essentially replaced the Diaper Genie Elite, and has proved to be a popular model.

Some parents were very unhappy to see the Diaper Genie Elite disappear from shelves.

The Complete was intended as an upgrade to the Elite, but some didn’t care for the changes made by Diaper Genie.

If you are interested in purchasing the Elite, you will struggle to find it for sale.

In Canada, the Diaper Genie Complete is still known as the Elite, which can be a little confusing!

But if you compare the specifications, you’ll notice Complete USA and Elite Canada are the same pails.
