One Day I Will Miss This

“Mama, pick me up!”

Hands reaching out.

“Can I sleep with you?”

Lays back across our body all night long.

“Can I share your seat?”

Sits down in the same seat as us,

Making It Impossible To Do Anything.

Wherever a mom is…

A little body plops itself on us.

They’ll pick the crowded couch corner with us on it over the empty spot, and we will both fall off.

They just want to be with us.

And as much as we crave space,

One day soon,

Things Will Be Different.

Because when they get older, we won’t be able to spend as much time together.

They’ll be pulled in many directions:

By school,

Extra-curriculars,

And friends.

We’ll no longer be the center of their universe but a supporting role in their lives.

We Won’t Have Someone On Us All Day.

Tugging at our pants when we’re cleaning the kitchen.

Sitting on our lap when we’re trying to take a bite of a sandwich.

Jumping on our backs when we bend to pick up a toy.

Wanting nothing more than to be on us,

Their 𝘴𝘢𝘧𝘦 𝘴𝘱𝘢𝘤𝘦 and 𝘤𝘰𝘮𝘧𝘰𝘳𝘵.

So, we should be glad they choose us to snuggle and hang on

And soak in all that love.

Because one day we will miss 𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘴.
