How Many Wipes Do I Need?

Baby wipes tend to become an essential item for most moms. As a lot of parents use their baby wipes for more than just a diaper change, the total number of baby wipes you use in a day, month, or year can vary greatly!

So, let’s just break it down based on how many you need for a baby.

How Many Baby Wipes Per Day?

Every newborn is different, but one thing that is certain is that the intensity of diaper changes reduces as a baby gets older. A newborn may require a diaper change between 10-12 times a day, reducing to 8-10 times per day by 3 months of age, and again to 6-8 times per day by 6 months of age. Every baby is different though, so it is best to be prepared until you understand your own baby’s requirements.

For each diaper change you can expect your baby to require an average of 1 baby wipe for each wet diaper and up to 10 baby wipes for a dirty diaper – especially if you are new to changing diapers.

As a newborn requires on average 10 diaper changes a day, the number of baby wipes required can be quite high in the early stages. It can be assumed that out of the 10 diaper changes, 7 will be wet and 3 will be dirty diapers (soiled).

So, if you do the math on that you can be going through as many as 37 baby wipes per day in the first 3 months alone.

This number of course will vary depending on your baby’s routine and how experienced at diaper changing you are!

If you are trying to average it out by how many baby wipe packets you’ll need, there are 72 wipes in a standard-sized Pampers baby wipes pack. So, you’ll may go through close to half a packet in a day with a newborn.

Due to the high demand, rather than buying individual wipes packets for your baby, we recommend buying the baby wipes refill packs, so you can just top up your wipes holder when needed.

How Many Baby Wipes Per Month?

If we follow the same logic as above the calculations can be confronting. You could assume you will need up to 1,100 baby wipes for the first 30 days alone, generalizing this out to 3,300 baby wipes for the first 90 days with your newborn.

This equates to about 15 packets of baby wipes per month and 45 packets of baby wipes within the first 90 days.

This may seem like a lot, but it is better to have more than you need than not enough. Remember, just one surprise dirty diaper and you will need up to 10 baby wipes not just the one.

The good news is that you are likely to use any surplus baby wipes within the first year or two, so it is better to keep some spares for those surprises, you know that the rainy day is just around the corner.

How Many Baby Wipes Per Year?

Thankfully, as your baby gets older, they will need fewer wipes as there will gradually become fewer diaper changes.

It is not uncommon however, to go through up to 8,000 baby wipes in your baby’s first year.

The average baby goes through roughly 100 standard-size packs of wipes in their first year!

These numbers are only considering the baby wipes required for diaper changes, it is likely that as your baby has fewer diaper changes you will begin to use baby wipes for other means, like cleaning your baby’s hands and face, a quick clean-up of spills and unexpected messes, and cleaning public spaces (such as highchairs).

It is best to be realistic and pays to be prepared. You will tend to use more baby wipes than you think. For this reason, I tend to buy my baby wipes when they are on sale.

If you find that the number of reusable baby wipes is too many for your liking, then you may want to look at using a baby wipe alternative, such as these cloth wipes.
