Add or remove a letter like adding an extra ‘s’ to ‘Lucas’ to make it ‘Lucass’.

You can even use different vowels to a unique sound, like changing ‘Owen’ to ‘Eoin’.

Tips For Choosing A Unique Boys’ Name

From my experience in researching over 100,000 baby names, I’ve learnt a thing or two about what makes a boy’s name unique.

So, let me share with you my top tips for choosing the perfect unique name.

1. Avoid The Trends

Whilst this may seem like an obvious tip, given that you’re looking for unique names, it’s still a good one to keep in mind! Trends like the recent resurgence in vintage boy names may have you looking to more unique old fashioned boy names, but the chances are there are a bunch of other parents doing the same. Looking for a less common trendy name, which unfortunately means it can quickly gain popularity.

I think the same goes for unusual or creative names you hear in pop culture. The more popular a tv series becomes or even a musical artist for that matter, the more chance you have of your unique name becoming less unique.

2. Get Creative With Sounds And Spelling

As I mentioned previously, changing the letter or spelling of a name can quickly add that unique twist that you are after!

I love it when I see a simple letter change which turns a common boy name into an edgy, cool boy name. Like ‘Austin’ to ‘Austyn’ or ‘Zain’ to ‘Xain’.

3. Consider The Potential Challenges

Whilst I really do love a name that standout, I think it is also important to be mindful of any possible long term implications of a very creative name, in terms of spelling it and how it is pronounced. Afterall, the last thing you want it for your son to end up being uncomfortable with their name because friends, colleagues, and even acquaintances don’t know how to pronounce it. Or worse your child is ridiculed for it.

4. Check It’s Meaning

Like with any name you choose, I think it’s important to check it’s meaning and origin ensure that it is something that you are comfortable with.

5. Think About Nicknames

Love the name Bridger or Bristol, but dread the thought of your son being called Bri? Nicknames are definitely something you need to strongly consider when choosing your name.

Unfortunately, some nicknames are no where near as cool as the first name you choose. You can not control what friends and even family choose as nicknames for your son, but possible nicknames are something to consider especially if there are some obvious ones you want to avoid.

Real Life Inspiration

If you’re looking for the perfect unique boys’ name for your son, or trying to decide between several names, then it might be time to look at some real life examples to help you decide.

And thankfully when it comes to strong unique names there are some great sources. My top picks include:

1. Your Heritage

Many cultures are a rich tradition and provide a treasure trove of unique and meaningful names.

Got ties to the Vikings? Then you might want to consider cool names like Ragnar, Bjorn, Ivar, Leif, Thorsten, or even Frey.

Or if you have an Irish heritage for example, you might like names like Cian, Eamon, Fionn, Lorcan, Ronan, Tadhg, Niall, or even Oisin.

In general, doing research, talking to family members, and looking for resources specific to your heritage can be a great way to find unique boy names. You may also consider looking beyond traditional sources and finding inspiration from other cultures or languages that share similarities with your heritage.

2. Your Family Tree

I think there can be something special about diving into your family history books and seeing if there are any strong and rare names that you can use, or even add a twist to, to pay homage to your own family history.

3. Your Travels

Different cultures and countries may have unique names that could easily be an inspiration you. I found that lots of baby names that are popular in one country are not so in another. So why not consider names of places you’ve traveled to and have a special meaning to you.

4. The Arts

One thing that is a standout when it comes to art and music is creativity! So to me, this is a great source of inspiration for cool and uncommon baby boy names. You can consider the names of favorite artists or musicians, or names that reflect a particular style or genre. Or even look through the history books to find less common names that don’t run the risk of becoming popular as your favorite artist grows in fame.

5. Family And Friends

Ever heard of the term six degrees of separation? Well the the idea is based on the theory that all people are six or fewer social connections away from each other. I love this concept when it comes to asking family and friends on their opinions on the most unique boy names they have heard. In theory, the chances are they have come across some pretty rare names that they can share with you. Ask a ton of people, and your chances of finding some unusual names you love increases!
